Referrals

The Maine Youth Court is a peer-led, community based alternative to more traditional disciplinary processes. To discuss a potential referral or make one please email the program manager based on the region where the youth lives and the incident took place.

For Greater Portland Area(including surrounding towns such as Gorham, Windham, Westbrook, Cape Elizabeth, Yarmouth, Cumberland etc.) and the Bath/Brunswick/Topsham region please email Abi or Monica:
Monica Bouyea at mbouyea@maineyouthcourt.org
Abi Maycock at amaycock@maineyouthcourt.org

For the Lewiston and Auburn regions please email Abi and Maggie:
Abi Maycock at amaycock@maineyouthcourt.org
Maggie Maiorana at mmaiorana@maineyouthcourt.org

Please contact us to get a referral sheet. Due to our capacity we cannot take every case, but will work with you to find another diversion and supports for the youth and families in need.

Who can refer?

A referring agency may be a Police Department, School Resource Officer, Juvenile Community Corrections Officer, District Attorney's Office, or School Administrator.

Which youth are eligible?

Youth in the Greater Portland, Cumberland, Yarmouth, Freeport, Westbrook, Windham, Gorham, Lewiston, Auburn, Brunswick, Topsham and Bath areas who have admitted to an offense to the law or school policy are eligible to participate.  Youth ages 12-17 are eligible, as well as 18-year olds who committed an offense before their 18th birthday.  We work with translation and interpretation services so that language is not a barrier to participation.

What's next?

Once a referral is made, Youth Court staff will contact the referred youth and his or her family to fully discuss the program requirements, structure, and benefits.  Youth Court staff will also schedule an intake meeting to have paperwork signed and to conduct a brief screening to determine if a substance abuse assessment is needed or any additional clinical supports. A restorative process will follow the intake with victims or person(s) most impacted, community members and supports being invited depending on the nature of impact. A repair agreement will come out of the restorative process with action items for the Respondent to complete. Staff will update referral sources at least monthly and upon completion of the program.
