​MAINE YOUTH COURT IS HIRING A COORDINATOR!

The Maine Youth Court is a system that allows young people who have violated the law to be held accountable by their peers. In MYC, highly trained youth community volunteers are supported by the Coordinator to act as advocates and facilitators, helping divert real youth offenders from possible detention through this peer lead, restorative process.

LOCATION: MYC serves the communities of Greater Portland, Bath/Brunswick, and Lewiston Auburn. The region this staff position will serve is to be determined. The Main office is located in Portland.
ANTICIPATED START DATE: As soon as possible.  Resumes will be accepted until position is filled.
SUMMARY: Provides hands on coordination of Restorative Justice Youth Court.

The MYC Coordinator will be responsible for: 
  • Soliciting, receiving, and processing all applicable referrals from Juvenile Corrections Community Officers (JCCO), Assistant District Attorneys, School Administrators and School Resource Officers;
  • Meeting with youth and their families to review the MYC program, restorative justice philosophy, and complete an intake
  • Maintaining records and communication for both youth volunteers and MYC respondents
  • Coordinating restorative processes, including volunteer and participant attendance
  • Data collection and data entry related to program evaluation
  • Facilitate occasional community conversations, including restorative justice processes
  • Supporting youth throughout their MYC process by making referrals and connecting to resources
  • Recruit, train, and maintain an adequate number of diverse youth volunteers to administer a restorative justice Maine Youth Court model
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS and SKILLS
  • This position requires a person that is highly motivated and organized, is able to work as a team member, and believes in restorative justice and youth leadership as an alternative model for juvenile justice.
  • BA degree preferred, preferably in the Social or Behavioral Sciences or Criminal Justice, or related work and/or personal experience.
  • Experience in or an understanding of the field of addiction, criminal justice, behavioral health, and trauma is also preferred for this position.  Preference given to direct experience involving youth offenders, individuals with a background in Restorative Justice or youth leadership and development. 
  • Must be at least 18 years of age; possess a valid Maine State Driver’s License with a clean driving record.   Must be able to satisfactorily pass a comprehensive background check.

Maine Youth Court offers competitive salary.  Benefits include a health care stipend equal to 13% of salary and generous time off.
